Eligible for conscription but no declared war service in Magdalen Record 1922

The men named below were deemed under the Military Service Acts of 1916 and 1918 to have enlisted in His Majesty’s forces but there is no evidence that they did so.[1] In order to find out why, we have looked at each in turn, and our conclusions are based largely on obituaries in The Times, and for clergy on their entry in Crockford’s Clerical Directory 1932; for others we have used their occupation at the time of the 1911 census; and if there is no reference we have relied on their own entry in the 1922 College record. Most were exempted within the terms of the Acts: Irish citizens, ministers of religion, civilians working in the national interest, the unfit, and conscientious objectors, and it is likely that many of the older men were not called to the colours. But for a small number we can find no reason why they did not serve in the forces.

Although eligible for conscription, many students born in 1900 and before 11 November did not serve. It seems likely that they were called up but had their enlistment deferred until they had finished full-time education, and by the time they were required to present themselves for service Armistice had been declared and their enlistment was rescinded. The date preceding each entry is the date of their matriculation.
