German, both his grandfathers Karl (1838-1897 an historian) and Paul (1841-1880 chemist) were sons of Felix Mendelssohn, and brothers of Marie Helene Pauline Mendelsshon (1839-1897) mother of Paul Victor Mendelsshon Benecke (1868-1944) Fellow of Magdalen (1891-1944). Hugo was a Banker in Vienna, London, New York and Berlin, settled in Basel founding the International Felix Mendelssohn Society.
