Copyright
A large piece of work like this, which amounts to about 1,000,000 words, almost inevitably involves problems of copyright.
The Editors have done their best to identify copyright problems and to obtain permissions from copyright holders where such permissions are necessary. Moreover, at the beginning of every individual biography, they have identified books and articles which have been particularly useful: ** = extremely useful; * = very useful. Finally, they have acknowledged the much-valued help of the men’s friends and families, especially where this involves manuscripts that are still under copyright – e.g. short biographies, letters and diaries.
But if you feel that the Editors have overlooked a copyright holder or not gone far enough in acknowledging help where it is due, then please contact them (message library@magd.ox.ac.uk for their email addresses) and they will make the necessary alterations with the minimum delay.
The research behind this project, which has been named The Slow Dusk by kind permission of the late Professor Jon Stallworthy FBA FRSL (1935–2014), has largely been funded by the Editors themselves, and the website has been created with the help of a generous grant from Michael McGowan, Magdalen (1982–87).
As a memorial site it is open to everyone, and families, friends, and other researchers are welcome to make use – free of charge – of any of the text that is not subject to copyright, though if you wish to do this, please acknowledge the source as “The Slow Dusk Project, Courtesy of Magdalen College, Oxford”. If you wish to use any part of the text or illustrations that is under copyright from a third party, then you must seek permission from the relevant owner(s).
We hope that our work is or will be of interest and value to you.
