Two Magdalen Alumni who may have been Conscientious Objectors and/or Pacifists

The men discussed as applying for exemption, with the exception of A.W. Clemes, were clearly conscientious objectors. But if Magdalen’s alumni numbered other men who did likewise, they are difficult to identify since little documentation is available. We do not know which Tribunal they appeared before, and even if we did, we would not necessarily have any details as some press reports do not name those appearing.

Two further alumni were against the war and would almost certainly have been conscientious objectors if they had been required for military service. One, however, Bunting, lived abroad and so was not affected by the Military Service Acts, and the other, the 9th Earl De La Warr, enlisted in a non-combatant organization before being called up.
