Oxford University Roll of Service
Over 1000 members of Magdalen[1] (about 70%) served in a capacity which entitled them to an entry in the Oxford University Roll of Service (OURoS), although not all were included. The OURoS lists those who served in World War One. Those who had not matriculated but were killed were included in the OURoS, but not all of those who matriculated during the war and survived were included. There does not seem to be an obvious reason why some were included and others not. The first name on the Magdalen list, Acheson-Lyle, served with the Shropshire Light Infantry in France from January 1918 and matriculated in 1919, whereas Bothamley, a lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment who matriculated in 1916 and served in France from October 1917 is not. The list below is a direct copy of the published list and no attempt has been made to correct it in any way. The date preceding each entry is the date of their matriculation.

V.C., won at Hooge on Feb. 4, 1916. For most conspicuous bravery. When the enemy exploded a mine, Lieutenant McNair and many men of two platoons were hoisted into the air, and many men were buried. But, though much shaken, he at once organized a party with a machine-gun to man the near edge of the crater and opened rapid fire on a large party of the enemy, who were advancing. The enemy were driven back, leaving many dead. Lieutenant McNair then ran back for reinforcements, and sent to another unit for bombs, ammunition, and tools, to replace those buried. The communication trench being blocked, he went across the open under heavy fire and led up the reinforcements the same way. His prompt and plucky action and example undoubtedly saved the situation.

[1] This does not include choristers who were members of Magdalen College School and thus on the Foundation; nor does it include College servants. On the College war memorial and in our detailed analysis of the Magdalen dead of WWI we include both of these groups as well as men who died of wounds after the Roll was published.
